Conditional Sentences: Real and Unreal

What Are Conditional Sentences?

Conditional sentences express conditions and their consequences — "if X, then Y". In German, they are formed with wenn (if/when) or falls (in case).

  • Wenn es regnet, bleibe ich zu Hause. (If it rains, I'll stay home.)
  • Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich eine Weltreise machen. (If I were rich, I would travel around the world.)

Real Conditions (Reale Bedingungen)

Real conditions describe situations that can or will happen. Both clauses use the indicative (normal tenses).

Present / Future

Both clauses typically use Präsens:

  • Wenn du fleißig lernst, bestehst du die Prüfung. (If you study hard, you'll pass the exam.)
  • Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich mit. (If I have time, I'll come along.)
  • Wenn es morgen schön ist, gehen wir wandern. (If it's nice tomorrow, we'll go hiking.)
  • Du kannst mich anrufen, wenn du Fragen hast. (You can call me if you have questions.)

Past

Both clauses use a past tense:

  • Wenn er zu spät kam, musste er draußen warten. (If he came late, he had to wait outside.)
  • Wenn ich müde war, bin ich früh ins Bett gegangen. (When I was tired, I went to bed early.)

Unreal Conditions — Present (Irreale Bedingungen — Gegenwart)

Unreal conditions describe situations that are not true or unlikely. Both clauses use Konjunktiv II.

Examples

  • Wenn ich mehr Geld hätte, würde ich ein Haus kaufen. (If I had more money, I would buy a house.)
  • Wenn ich du wäre, würde ich den Job nehmen. (If I were you, I would take the job.)
  • Wenn wir ein Auto hätten, könnten wir aufs Land fahren. (If we had a car, we could drive to the countryside.)
  • Wenn er besser Deutsch spräche, würde er die Prüfung bestehen. (If he spoke better German, he would pass the exam.)
  • Es wäre schön, wenn du kommen könntest. (It would be nice if you could come.)

Unreal Conditions — Past (Irreale Bedingungen — Vergangenheit)

These describe conditions that did not happen in the past — missed opportunities, regrets.

Formation

Examples

  • Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, hätte ich dir geholfen. (If I had known that, I would have helped you.)
  • Wenn er früher aufgestanden wäre, hätte er den Zug erreicht. (If he had gotten up earlier, he would have caught the train.)
  • Wenn wir mehr geübt hätten, hätten wir die Prüfung bestanden. (If we had practised more, we would have passed the exam.)
  • Ich wäre gekommen, wenn ich Zeit gehabt hätte. (I would have come if I had had time.)

Wenn-Omission (Verb-First Inversion)

In formal or written German, wenn can be omitted. The verb then moves to the first position in the conditional clause.

Wenn Sie Fragen haben, ... Haben Sie Fragen, ...

Examples

  • Hätte ich mehr Geld, würde ich ein Haus kaufen. (Had I more money, I would buy a house.)
  • Wäre ich du, würde ich den Job nehmen. (Were I you, I would take the job.)
  • Hätte ich das gewusst, hätte ich dir geholfen. (Had I known that, I would have helped you.)
  • Haben Sie noch Fragen, rufen Sie uns an. (Should you have any questions, give us a call.)

This construction sounds more formal and is common in written German.

falls vs. wenn

Both mean "if", but with a slight difference:

wenn General "if" — used in most situations
falls "In case" — emphasizes that the condition is uncertain or less likely

Examples

  • Wenn du kommst, bringe bitte Brot mit. (If you come, please bring bread.)
  • Falls du kommst, bringe bitte Brot mit. (In case you come, please bring bread.) — less certain
  • Falls es Probleme gibt, können Sie mich anrufen. (In case there are problems, you can call me.)

Note: falls is only used for real conditions, not for Konjunktiv II sentences.

Common Mistakes

  • Wenn ich wäre reich, ich würde reisen. (wrong — verb goes to end in wenn-clause, and V2 in main clause)

  • Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich reisen. (correct)

  • Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, ich hätte dir geholfen. (wrong — main clause needs V2 after wenn-clause)

  • Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, hätte ich dir geholfen. (correct)

  • Wenn ich Zeit hätte, ich komme mit. (wrong — mixing real and unreal: Konjunktiv II in wenn-clause but indicative in main clause)

  • Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich mitkommen. (correct)

  • Falls ich reich wäre, würde ich reisen. (unusual — falls is for real conditions)

  • Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich reisen. (correct)

Relevance for the TELC B1 Exam

Conditional sentences are important across the exam:

  • Language Elements (Sprachbausteine) — Choosing between wenn and falls, or completing sentences with the correct verb form (Konjunktiv II vs. indicative)
  • Written Expression — Conditional sentences are very useful for formal letters (e.g. Es wäre nett, wenn Sie mir die Unterlagen schicken könnten. — It would be nice if you could send me the documents.)
  • Speaking — Expressing wishes and hypothetical situations in the oral exam

Make sure you can distinguish between real and unreal conditions, and practise the past unreal — it is the most challenging but also the most impressive to use!
