Konjunktiv II: Wishes, Advice, and Polite Requests
What is the Konjunktiv II?
The Konjunktiv II expresses unreal situations, wishes, polite requests, and advice. It is particularly important for the Written Expression and Language Elements sections of the TELC B1 exam.
Formation
With "würde" + Infinitive
The simplest form — used for most verbs:
- Ich würde gerne kommen. (I would like to come.)
- Wir würden das machen. (We would do that.)
- Sie würde lieber zu Hause bleiben. (She would prefer to stay home.)
Common Irregular Forms
Some verbs have their own Konjunktiv II forms that are frequently used:

Usage
1. Polite Requests
- Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen? (Could you please help me?)
- Hätten Sie einen Moment Zeit? (Would you have a moment?)
- Würden Sie das bitte wiederholen? (Would you please repeat that?)
2. Wishes
- Ich hätte gerne ein Glas Wasser. (I would like a glass of water.)
- Ich wäre gerne in Urlaub. (I wish I were on vacation.)
- Ich würde gerne besser Deutsch sprechen. (I would like to speak German better.)
3. Advice
- Du solltest mehr üben. (You should practice more.)
- An deiner Stelle würde ich früher anfangen. (In your place, I would start earlier.)
- Es wäre besser, wenn du pünktlich kommst. (It would be better if you come on time.)
4. Unreal Conditional Sentences
- Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich mehr lesen. (If I had more time, I would read more.)
- Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich um die Welt reisen. (If I were rich, I would travel the world.)
Common Mistakes
- Wenn ich Zeit habe, würde ich kommen. (wrong — both parts must be in Konjunktiv II)
- Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen. (correct)
