Connectors: Linking Sentences Correctly
What are Connectors?
Connectors (Konnektoren) are words that link sentences or parts of sentences together. They show logical relationships such as reason, contrast, consequence, or time. They play a central role in the TELC B1 exam.
The Three Groups of Connectors
1. Conjunctions (Position 0)
These connectors stand before the subject and do not change the word order:
- und (and) — Ich lerne Deutsch und ich arbeite in Berlin.
- aber (but) — Ich möchte kommen, aber ich habe keine Zeit.
- oder (or) — Kommst du mit oder bleibst du zu Hause?
- denn (because) — Ich lerne Deutsch, denn ich brauche es für die Arbeit.
- sondern (but rather) — Ich fahre nicht mit dem Auto, sondern ich nehme den Bus.
2. Adverbs (Position 1)
These connectors stand in position 1 — the verb comes next:
- deshalb/deswegen (therefore) — Ich bin müde, deshalb gehe ich ins Bett.
- trotzdem (nevertheless) — Es regnet, trotzdem gehen wir spazieren.
- dann/danach (then/after that) — Zuerst dusche ich, dann frühstücke ich.
- außerdem (moreover) — Das Hotel ist günstig. Außerdem liegt es zentral.
- jedoch (however) — Das Wetter ist schön, jedoch ist es kalt.
3. Subjunctions (Verb at the End)
These connectors introduce subordinate clauses — the verb goes to the end:
- weil (because) — Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.
- obwohl (although) — Ich gehe raus, obwohl es regnet.
- wenn (if/when) — Wenn du kommst, freue ich mich.
- dass (that) — Ich hoffe, dass du kommst.
- damit (so that) — Ich übe, damit ich die Prüfung bestehe.

Common Mistakes
- Ich bin müde, trotzdem ich gehe ins Bett. (wrong — verb after trotzdem)
- Ich bin müde, trotzdem gehe ich ins Bett. (correct)
- Weil ich bin krank. (wrong — verb at the end!)
- Weil ich krank bin. (correct)
