Subordinate Clauses: Word Order and Conjunctions

What is a Subordinate Clause?

A subordinate clause (Nebensatz) is a dependent clause that cannot stand alone. It is introduced by a conjunction and has special word order: the conjugated verb goes to the end.

The Basic Rule

Main clause: Subject — Verb — Object Ich lerne Deutsch. (I'm learning German.)

Subordinate clause: Conjunction — Subject — ... — Verb (at the end) ..., weil ich in Deutschland lebe. (...because I live in Germany.)

Important Conjunctions

Causal (Reason)

  • weil — Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich die Prüfung bestehen möchte. (because I want to pass the exam)
  • da — Da es regnet, bleiben wir zu Hause. (since it's raining)

Temporal (Time)

  • wenn — Wenn ich nach Hause komme, koche ich. (when I come home)
  • als — Als ich ein Kind war, habe ich in Berlin gewohnt. (when I was a child)
  • bevor — Bevor du gehst, ruf mich bitte an. (before you go)
  • nachdem — Nachdem ich gegessen hatte, bin ich spazieren gegangen. (after I had eaten)
  • während — Während ich lerne, hört mein Bruder Musik. (while I study)
  • seit/seitdem — Seit ich in Deutschland wohne, spreche ich besser Deutsch. (since I've lived in Germany)

Conditional

  • wenn — Wenn du Zeit hast, können wir ins Kino gehen. (if you have time)
  • falls — Falls es regnet, nehmen wir den Bus. (in case it rains)

Purpose (Final)

  • damit — Ich übe jeden Tag, damit ich die Prüfung bestehe. (so that I pass)
  • um ... zu — Ich übe jeden Tag, um die Prüfung zu bestehen. (in order to pass)

Concessive

  • obwohl — Obwohl es regnet, gehen wir spazieren. (although it's raining)

Clauses with "dass"

  • Ich denke, dass die Prüfung schwer ist. (I think that the exam is difficult.)
  • Es ist wichtig, dass du pünktlich kommst. (It's important that you come on time.)

Word Order: Subordinate Clause Before Main Clause

When the subordinate clause comes before the main clause, the main clause starts with the verb:

  • Weil ich müde bin, gehe ich ins Bett.
  • Wenn du kommst, freue ich mich.

"wenn" vs. "als"

wenn als
Present / Future Always wenn —
Past (one-time event) — Als ich 18 war...
Past (repeated) Immer wenn ich... —

Common Mistakes

  • Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich möchte die Prüfung bestehen. (wrong)
  • Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich die Prüfung bestehen möchte. (correct — verb at the end!)
