Listening Comprehension Tips
Structure of the Listening Section
The Listening Comprehension section lasts about 30 minutes and consists of three parts:
- Part 1: True/False statements about announcements or short conversations
- Part 2: Multiple choice about a longer conversation or interview
- Part 3: True/False about everyday conversations
You will generally hear the recordings twice.
Before Listening
Read Tasks in Advance
Use the pauses between sections to read the questions ahead of time. This way you'll know what to listen for.
Mark Keywords
Underline the most important words in the questions and answer choices. This helps you listen more purposefully.
While Listening
First Listen
- Focus on the overall understanding
- Answer questions you're confident about
- Mark uncertain answers
Second Listen
- Verify your answers
- Focus on remaining open questions
- Pay attention to details you may have missed the first time
Avoiding Common Mistakes
1. Don't Try to Understand Every Word
You don't need to understand every single word. Focus on the overall context and the information relevant to the questions.
2. Don't Give Up Too Quickly
If you don't immediately know an answer, guess anyway. Leaving an answer blank always results in zero points.
3. Don't Get Distracted
Focus entirely on the listening text. Don't think about previous tasks.
Preparation at Home
- Listen to German podcasts and news regularly
- Practice with mock tests under realistic conditions
- Get used to different speaking speeds and accents
