Aufgaben 1–10

Choose the right answer for each question.

  1. Question 1: Choose: Das ist der Mann, ___ mir geholfen hat.

Why: 'Der Mann' is masculine. The relative pronoun is the subject of the relative clause (he helped me), so nominative 'der'.

  2. Question 2: Fill in: Die Frau, ___ ich gestern getroffen habe, ist Ärztin.

Why: 'Die Frau' is feminine. The pronoun is the direct object (Akkusativ) — feminine Akkusativ = 'die'.

  3. Question 3: Choose: Das Kind, ___ Eltern verreist sind, bleibt bei der Oma.

Why: Genitive relative pronoun for neuter: 'dessen'. The child whose parents are away...

  4. Question 4: Complete: Der Lehrer, bei ___ wir Deutsch lernen, ist sehr nett.

Why: 'Bei' takes the dative case. Masculine dative = 'dem'. The teacher with whom we learn German.

  5. Question 5: Fill in: Die Bücher, ___ auf dem Tisch liegen, gehören mir.

Why: 'Die Bücher' is plural. The pronoun is nominative (subject of 'liegen'). Plural nominative = 'die'.

  6. Question 6: Choose: Das ist das Restaurant, in ___ wir gestern gegessen haben.

Why: 'In' with location (where?) takes dative. 'Das Restaurant' is neuter, so dative = 'dem'.

  7. Question 7: Fill in: Die Kollegin, ___ ich das Buch geliehen habe, hat es zurückgebracht.

Why: 'Leihen' takes dative for the person. Feminine dative = 'der'. The colleague to whom I lent the book.

  8. Question 8: Choose: Alles, ___ er gesagt hat, war richtig.

Why: After indefinite pronouns like 'alles', 'etwas', 'nichts', use 'was' (not 'das') as the relative pronoun.

  9. Question 9: Complete: Die Stadt, ___ ich komme, liegt im Süden.

Why: 'Aus' takes dative. 'Die Stadt' is feminine, feminine dative = 'der'. The city from which I come.

  10. Question 10: Fill in: Die Freunde, mit ___ ich in den Urlaub fahre, sind lustig.

Why: 'Mit' takes dative. Plural dative = 'denen'. The friends with whom I go on vacation.
