Präteritum (einfache Vergangenheit)

Aufgaben 1–10

Choose the right answer for each question.

  1. Question 1: Fill in: Gestern ___ ich den ganzen Tag zu Hause. (bleiben)

Why: 'Bleiben' is a strong verb. Its Präteritum form is 'blieb' (ich blieb, du bliebst, er blieb).

  2. Question 2: Choose: Die Kinder ___ im Garten. (spielen)

Why: 'Spielen' is a regular verb. In Präteritum, regular verbs add '-te' to the stem: spiel → spielten (3rd person plural).

  3. Question 3: Fill in: Er ___ mir gestern einen langen Brief. (schreiben)

Why: 'Schreiben' is a strong verb with a vowel change: schreiben → schrieb.

  4. Question 4: Choose: Wir ___ letztes Jahr nicht in den Urlaub fahren. (können)

Why: Modal verbs in Präteritum lose their umlaut: können → konnten. 'Könnten' would be Konjunktiv II.

  5. Question 5: Fill in: Sie ___ an ihre Kindheit. (denken)

Why: 'Denken' is a mixed verb: it changes its stem like a strong verb but takes weak endings: denken → dachte.

  6. Question 6: Choose: Meine Großeltern ___ früher auf dem Land. (leben)

Why: 'Leben' is regular. The 3rd person plural Präteritum is 'lebten' (stem + -ten).

  7. Question 7: Fill in: Es ___ damals keinen Computer. (geben)

Why: 'Geben' is a strong verb: geben → gab. 'Es gab' is the Präteritum of 'es gibt' (there is/are).

  8. Question 8: Choose: Er ___ nicht, wo der Schlüssel war. (wissen)

Why: 'Wissen' is a mixed verb with a stem change: wissen → wusste. Note the double 's'.

  9. Question 9: Fill in: Letzten Sommer ___ es sehr heiß. (werden)

Why: 'Werden' is a strong verb: werden → wurde (ich/er/es wurde). It is very common in Präteritum.

  10. Question 10: Choose: Sie ___ das Buch auf den Tisch und ging. (legen)

Why: 'Legen' (to put/lay) is a regular verb: legen → legte. Don't confuse it with the strong verb 'liegen' → lag (to lie).
